NEW TYORK (AP) – Jacob DeGrom (deh-GRAHM’) and the New York Mets have agreed to a one-year, $17 million contract, a record raise for an arbitration-eligible player. DeGrom made $7.4 million while leading the majors with a 1.70 ERA and striking out 269 over 217 innings last season. He was selected to his second All-Star Game in 2018 and came away with the NL Cy Young Award.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – Reigning major league home run king Khris Davis has avoided arbitration by accepting a one-year, $16.5 million deal with the Oakland Athletics. Davis received a hefty raise from the A’s last winter, then went out and hit a majors-best 48 home runs while setting a career high with 123 RBIs to help the club earn a wild-card berth. The Athletics also agreed to one-year deals with left-hander Sean Manaea (mah-NY’-ah), infielders Jurickson Profar (JUR’-ihk-suhn PROH’-fahr) and Marcus Semien and outfielder Mark Canha (KAN’-ah) to avoid arbitration.
NEW YORK (AP) – Free-agent second baseman D.J. LeMahieu (leh-MAY’-hyoo) and the New York Yankees have agreed to a two-year, $24 million contract, according to a person familiar with the negotiations. The 30-year-old Gold Glove winner spent the previous eight seasons with Colorado at hitter-friendly Coors Field and won the NL batting title in 2016 with a .348 average. He hit .276 last year with 15 homers and 62 RBIs, and he won his second straight Gold Glove and third overall.
NEW YORK (AP) – The New York Jets have officially announced the hiring of Adam Gase as their head coach, two days after the two sides came to an agreement. The 40-year-old Gase was 23-26 in three seasons and one playoff game with Miami before being fired last week. He replaces Todd Bowles, who was let go following a 4-12 season.
PITTSBURGH (AP) – The Pittsburgh Penguins have given goaltender Casey DeSmith a three-year contract extension worth $3.75 million. The 27-year-old DeSmith is 12-7-4 with a 2.47 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage this season. He began the season as the backup netminder but played regularly during November and December while Matt Murray dealt with a lower-body injury and inconsistent play.
