The Jets had a long list of candidates for their head coaching vacancy, but they decided to go with Adam Gase. However, Todd Monken was a close second.
According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, the former Buccaneers offensive coordinator was the runner-up for the Jets head coaching job. Breer added that Monkey was also the runner-up for the Packers job.
Monken was the last candidate the Jets interviewed, as that was on Tuesday. He joined the Buccaneers in 2016 as their offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach before becoming the full-time offensive coordinator in 2018.
The Buccaneers offense was one of the best in the league under Monken. Last season, the Buccaneers averaged 24.8 points per game, which was 12th in the league. In addition, they averaged the third most yards in the league with 415.5 yards and the most passing yards with 320.3.
Cincinnati is the only other team that has interviewed Monken for a head coaching job, but it is appearing more likely that he takes a coordinator position. If so, he will be a hot target next offseason once again.
