One of Mike Maccagnan’s second round busts has found a new home.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, former Jets wide receiver Devin Smith has signed a reserve/futures contract with the Dallas Cowboys.
The 26-year-old wideout from Ohio State was a second round pick by the Jets in 2015. He was expected to be their deep threat — what Robby Anderson has become — but too many injuries have plagued his career thus far.
Smith suited up for 10 games in his rookie season, but he only had nine catches for 155 yards and a touchdown. Smith suffered a knee injury in Week 14 and it was later revealed that he had torn his ACL, thus ending his first season. Due to the injury, Smith started the 2016 season on the PUP list and only managed to play in four games. He had one catch for 20 yards.
The 2017 season was a make or break year for Smith, but he tore the same ACL in April. The Jets placed him on injured reserve and waived him during training camp in 2018. He and the Jets parted ways after just 10 catches, 135 yards, one touchdown and 14 games.
Considered one of the best receivers in his class before injuries got the best of him, maybe a fresh start in Dallas is what Smith needs to upstart his career.
