The jury is still out on the Jets’ biggest free-agent signing of this offseason, with cornerback Trumaine Johnson having an up-and-down first four games before missing last week with a quad injury.
But Mike Maccagnan deserves kudos for some of the other acquisitions he made this winter that are already paying dividends.
— Running back Isaiah Crowell set the franchise record with 219 rushing yards in Sunday’s win over the Broncos. He is third in the NFL with 390 yards and tied for second with five rushing touchdowns.
— Return specialist Andre Roberts is leading the NFL with 231 punt return yards and snapped a six-year drought for the Jets by returning one for a touchdown.
— Linebacker Avery Williamson has proven to be a sure tackler in the middle and has two sacks.
— Defensive end Henry Anderson has 2 ½ sacks this season in a limited role
— Outside linebacker Brandon Copeland has become a starter and has a sack. His backup Jeremiah Attaochu, a late pickup, registered a sack on Sunday.
How Johnson pans out ultimately will be more remembered than how these guys play, but at the moment Maccagnan has more hits than misses from his offseason.
